Teaching Reading in the Early Grades

This course examines theories and principles that guide emergent literacy instruction. Focus is on the cognitive development of the emergent reader and right brain-based research. Strong emphasis is placed on phonemic awareness. Assessment tools and approaches to reading instruction, including ability grouping are examined and applied. Strategies for teaching reading and writing skills are contextualized in children's literature. Multicultural perspectives and technology are used to facilitate and reinforce instruction. This course requires a 20 hour field experience with 10 hours of observation in a classroom during reading time and 10 hours of tutoring a student with the classroom teacher's guidance. Verification of professional liability insurance, a criminal background check and a Pre-Service Certification number are required prior to receiving a school placement.

**If a candidate has not obtained PSC Pre-service Certification by March 1, 2016, they will not be allowed to report out in the field and will be required to withdraw from the course.**

Important Notice about Certification:

Beginning Fall 2015, the state of Georgia will require that anyone participating in any course requiring a field experience, where the candidate will enter a public or charter school, must hold a Pre-Service Certification.  This requirement will impact all courses requiring field experience beyond education foundation courses (EDUC 2110, 2120 & 2130).

Candidates admitted to the Bagwell College of Education must complete and submit to the Education Student Services office two forms in order to obtain the required Pre-Service Certification.  The Education Student Services office is located in Kennesaw Hall, Suite 1314.  Failure to submit a completed packet, in a timely manner, may result in a candidates inability to complete field experience hours required in a course for which they are registered.

The Deadline to Sign-up for a Field Experience Placement for ECE 3320, ECE 3340, and ECE 4635:

You will be given placement dates to sign-up for a field experience through CEPP. A confirmation page will appear after you hit submit that includes your name, placement requested, mapquest link, and contact telephone for the school where you will be placed. Please make sure you print and save your confirmation as evidence of your placement. Because of the need to communicate placement requests to the schools in a timely manner, deadlines for sign-up are firm. If you fail to sign-up by the deadline, you will be required to withdraw from the course because you cannot pass the course without the field experience. If, for some reason, you go online and the placement request site is not functioning, you must e-mail CEPP (fieldexp@kennesaw.edu) and copy your instructor DURING the sign-up time to indicate that you are having a sign-up issue. You will then be given the opportunity to select from the remaining placements. Contacting CEPP after the sign-up date is NOT an option. If you do not contact CEPP and/or cannot provide confirmation that you have registered for a sign-up, no late placements will be made, and you will be required to withdraw from the course.
