    I am a professor of special education and teach masters, specialist and doctoral courses in the Inclusive Education Department. I have over 25 years of teaching and administrative experience in public schools and higher education. My research interests include the use of drawings as research tools in qualitative research, Vygotskian theory, intersubjectivity, and interpersonal/intrapersonal planes of cognition.

    With a background in Spanish teaching and translation, I teach classes in TESOL programs that address how intersections of race, language, and culture impact teaching and learning. From theoretical and practical perspectives, I prepare educators to critically reflect on how systems of power and privilege (including educators') interact with curricula, pedagogy, and educational policy to reify or dismantle societal inequities. My research focuses on bilingual education including language policy and programs, school-community relationships, and classroom practices that engage language minoritized students, families, and communities.

    Having lived in India and Venezuela before immigrating to the United States, my life experiences with different cultures and languages have shaped my beliefs and research on bilingual education. I teach both M.A.T. and M.Ed. classes focusing on teaching for social justice and supporting the multilingual meaning making practices of emergent bilingual learners in U.S. classrooms.
