Ed.S. Middle Grades Social Studies [Online]

Program Description (30 Hours, Completed in 4 Semesters)

The Ed.S. in Middle Grades Education is designed for candidates who have already earned an M.Ed. in Middle Grades Education or a related field and wish to continue graduate study in order to enhance their expertise and improve their practice. Candidates will develop in-depth knowledge and skills to implement in their classrooms and schools in ways that advance all students’ rights to an education that supports social and economic justice and academic success. Courses focusing on technology, learner-centered curriculum and instruction, learners and families from diverse backgrounds, and critical pedagogy will aid candidates in meeting these crucial needs. Successful graduates of the Ed.S. at Kennesaw State University may apply their entire program of study to the Ed.D. in Middle Grades Education.

Admission Requirements
  1. An earned master’s degree in professional education or a related field. 
  2. A clear and renewable (or comparable) Georgia Teaching Certificate or equivalent in the teaching field to which you are applying or a related field. 
  3. A minimum of three years of experience teaching Social Studies in middle schools.
  4. Research Response & Analysis writing sample and instruction. The applicant will select from a list of recent research articles in their area of content expertise and provide a 3-5 page written response to the article. Download list of pdf articles - Urban LegendENED-1ENED-2 and ENED-3.  
  5. Graduate Record Exam or Miller’s Analogies Test; OR Submit the GRE/MAT Waiver Form indicating any one of the following: That you hold an advanced degree in a teaching field related to your certification area with a GPA of 3.8 or higher on a 4 point scale; OR That you hold National Board Certification in an Early Adolescent or Adolescent, Young Adult cert area; OR That you have 7 years of professional teaching experience AND an undergraduate GPA in a teaching field of 3.5 or higher on a 4 point scale.
How do I Apply
  1. Complete the On-line Graduate Application.
  2. Obtain and submit official transcripts from EACH college attended, including those institutions where degrees were NOT earned. Official transcripts are those in a university sealed envelope. Your transcripts should reflect at least a Master’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
  3. Complete and submit a Professional Resume documenting education, teaching experience, volunteer and service accomplishments, and record of leadership activities. Your resume MUST reflect at least three years of teaching experience.
  4. Complete and submit the Research Response & Analysis writing sample.
  5. Complete and submit the GRE/MAT Waiver Form.  OR Submit an official copy of your GRE/MAT scores. 
  6. Final decisions by the admissions committee are based on a comprehensive, competitive review of all materials.
