Young people are the future. And CiSTEMer is developing students to become leaders through math education. In collaboration with The Young People’s Project and The Algebra Project, CiSTEMer utilizes their near-peer model of allowing students to take charge of their Education and the way math is taught. As a result, these students serve as Math Literacy Workers (MLWs), a term developed by The Young People’s Project. MLWs typically range from high school to college-aged students, and they are all trained in many ways to develop the mathematical literacy of younger students. This is done through a series of student-created games, activities, conversations and mentorship opportunities. Through CiSTEMer, Math Literacy Work is done by students for school districts, colleges and universities, nonprofit organizations and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).
About the Program
As a part of the National Society of Black Engineer's (NSBE) pre-college initative, College Math Liteacy Workers in Kennesaw State Univeristy’s NSBE (KSBE) chapter lead bi-monthly NSBE Jr. workshops with elementary, middle and high school students in Cobb County. Aligning with NSBE’s mission to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community, KSBE CMLWs present topics from The Algebra Project’s Accessible Calculus curriculum in a fun and comprehensive manner.

Why is it unique?Kennesaw State University’s NSBE chapter operates in a fully student-run and organized manner. In addition to organizing themselves in teams that facilitate different elementary, middle and high school NSBE Jr. sessions, KSBE CMLWs have also organized a team of student curriculum writers. These curriculum writers take concepts from The Algebra Project’s Accessible Calculus curriculum - which incorporates calculus concepts throughout Algebra II courses – and adapt them into games and activities that are facilitated by college students to NSBE Jr. members.
