To honor Black History Month, Dr. Marrielle Myers will facilitate a discussion and learning session based on an episode of the Intersectionality Matters podcast called "The Insurgent Origins of Critical Race Theory." The session is designed to be interactive and reflective, including both whole group and small group discussion of the origins of CRT, what it means for us in BCOE, how to protect our academic freedom and our right to use theoretical frameworks, and the importance of taking a critical approach to our scholarship.
Attendees are strongly encouraged to listen to the podcast episode prior to the session, but all are welcome. You can download the episode from Apple Podcasts or stream it on Sound Cloud (or find it on any other podcast platform).

For the last three semesters, CETL-Faculty Success has invited colleagues to join a semester-long writing accountability group for faculty interested in writing a journal article in one semester. Following years of field-tested strategies by Wendy Laura Belcher in her book Writing your Journal Article in Twelve Weeks: A Guide to Academic Publishing Success, the group is supported by weekly writing and revision activities, regular check-ins, and collaboration with group members to provide writing accountability and feedback. Dr. Letizia Guglielmo will open the session with an overview of Belcher’s (2019) work and CETL’s WYJA initiative, followed by a panel of BCOE faculty who will discuss their experiences and what they learned from participating in WYJA groups.

    • 1:00-2:30pm – Drop-In Accountable Writing Group
RC’s drop-in accountable writing group is based on a modified Pomodoro technique. During the opening 5-10 minutes, everyone is invited to share what they are working on and list some short-term writing goals. Then, everyone writes for 25 minutes, followed by a 5-minute break, and another 25-minute writing session. At the end of the second writing session, we check back in and talk about the progress we made, and what we see as next steps. All are welcome!

    Write Day - September 24, 2021

First, in recognition of Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month, we invited those of you who have engaged in scholarship in the service of Latinx/Hispanic learners, teachers, or communities to share some of their work. Follow this link (or see below) to learn more about the five fascinating projects that were shared with us. We will also post the link on the Research Consortium website.

Secondly, on behalf of the RC Committee, and in partnership with the Global Engagement Committee and Diversity Committee, I am proud to present this month's Write Day on the theme, "Global Perspectives in Local Contexts." See a brief version of the agenda below. A more detailed agenda is attached.

    • 10:00-10:45 - How Can Teachers and Teacher Educators Work with Communities from Different National, Linguistic, and Cultural Backgrounds Toward Meaningful Educational Experiences? (Drs. Paula Guerra and Sanjuana Rodriguez). First, in recognition of Latinx Heritage Month, Drs. Guerra and Rodriguez will share studies conducted with the Latinx BCOE Student Group employing pláticas, or “conversations which are a way of gathering family and cultural knowledge through communication of thoughts, memories, ambiguities and new interpretations” (Gonzalez, 1998).
    • 12-12:45 - Lunch (food will be provided for those who plan to attend in person and RSVP by Thursday at 1pm)
    • 1:00-1:45 - Localizing the Global: Literalizing the Metaphor of Gentrification of Dual-Language Bilingual Education (Dr. James Gambrell). Scholars in dual language bilingual education (DLBE) have been using the concept of the gentrification to describe the process by which primarily White, heritage English speakers have mainstreamed and occupied dual-language education narratives, spaces, and resources (Valdez, et al., 2016). Dr. James Gambrell deepens this critique by putting the gentrification metaphor in more literal conversation with previous scholars who have analyzed historical processes of settler colonialism to understand gentrification of metropolitan spaces.

Note: This will be a hybrid Write Day. If you plan to attend in person, please RSVP using this link by 1:00pm on Thursday, September 23. Do not RSVP if you plan to attend remotely. Use this link to join via Teams.

    Write Day – September 3, 2021

    • 10:00-11:30 - Writing in Community (BEB 403): This is unstructured time in which the IRML will be open to those who wish to work on their writing and research projects in the company of peers and colleagues. The goal is not (necessarily) to discuss your work with one another, but rather to gather in community to motivate and support one another. Those who wish to join remotely are also welcome to do so.
    • 12:00-12:45 - Lunch (BEB 403): Lunch will be provided for those who are attending Write Day activities in person (make sure to RSVP  if you are planning to attend in person, and especially if you are planning to order lunch).
    • 1:00-2:30 - Something(s) Old, Something(s) New: Supporting Scholarship at KSU :Drs. Megan Adams, Este Jordan (CETL's Director of Faculty Success), Iván Jorrín, and Olga Koz will discuss some new and underutilized resources that can support your and (your studnets' ) scholarship and creative activites.

    • Marrielle Myers - Supporting Pre-Service Teachers in Teaching Critical Mathematics: Bridging the Gap Between the Methods Classroom and the Field – Research project in progress.
    • Mei-Lin Chang - Motivational Profiles of At-Risk Middle Grade Students in Mathematics in an Urban School - The purpose of this study is to use a person-centered approach (i.e. latent profile analysis, LPA) to understand the motivational profiles of middle grade students using variables such as self-efficacy, self-regulation, teacher support, help-seeking behavior, and co-regulation to further explore how the various motivational profiles relate to academic resilience and academic achievement. Participants included 1080 students in grades 7 and 8 enrolled at a Title-I school in the southeastern United States. The results indicated a three-class solution for the motivational profiles: students who have comparably low levels on all motivational variables (Disengaged, N = 157); students who are highly motivated (Motivated, N = 877); students who are characterized by high levels of self-efficacy and self-regulation, but have the lowest levels in perceived teacher support, co-regulation and help-seeking (Individualist, N = 46). Write Day – September 21, 2018

Please join the BCOE Research Consortium for Write Day this Friday, September 21. In a needs assessment conducted in spring 2018, BCOE faculty shared with us that on a few Write Days, there should be more opportunities for writing and opportunities to participate from off-campus. We listened!
Most of the day is dedicated to pure writing time. Please post what you're working on on the RCC Facebook page, and encourage your colleagues in their research and writing. If you are not on Facebook, send me your information, and I'll post it on FB for you.
Aside from writing, you are welcome to participate in any of the following events:
