The MAT in Special Education leads to a Master’s degree and initial P-12 Certification in Special Education General Curriculum. Candidates are eligible for the Dyslexia Endorsement upon completion and receipt of their Georgia clear renewable teaching certificate. 

How long will it take to complete?
Students complete the 36 credit hours (minimum) of coursework over a period of 4 semesters (including the summer).

What certificate level are you eligible for?
Initial P-12 certification in Special Education and Dyslexia Endorsement.

Summer (9 credit hours)

  • INED 7710:  Foundations in Special Education (3 credit hours)
  • INED 7650:  Curriculum and Instruction for Students with Disabilities (3 credit hours)
  • ITEC 7400:  21st Century Teaching and Learning (3 credit hours) 

Fall I (9 credit hours)

  • EDUC 6610: Introduction to Yearlong Clinical Experience (0 credit hours)
  • INED 6651: SPED Yearlong Clinical Experience I (3 credit hours) 
  • INED 7620: Positive Behavior Management Strategies (3 credit hours)
  • INED 7621: Assessment for Learners with Dyslexia (3 credit hours)

Spring I (9 credit hours)

  • INED 6661:  SPED Yearlong Clinical Experience II (3 credit hours)
  • EDRD 6718:  Content Area Reading and Writing (3 credit hours)
  • INED 7631: Evidence-Based Instruction/Intervention for Learners with Dyslexia (3 credit hours)

Summer II (9 credit hours)

  • INED 7780:  Collaborative Practices (3 credit hours)
  • INED 7611: Introduction to Dyslexia and Other Learning Disabilities (3 credit hours)

TOTAL: 36 Credit Hours

Admission Requirements

Must possess the following beyond the general KSU Graduate College Admission Requirements:  

  • Degree – Bachelor’s degree.
  • Georgia Educator Ethics Assessment – Uploaded to graduate application. Information may be found on the GACE Ethics website.  You may print a copy of your completion certification from the GACE Ethics test taker website.
  • Professional Resume – Uploaded to graduate application.  Should document education, any teaching experience, volunteer and service accomplishments, and record of leadership activities.
  • Reference Forms – Forms and their directions are in the online graduate application. Please do not submit letters of recommendation. Only the forms completed via the graduate application will be accepted. These two forms of recommendation must come from an educational professional or someone who can attest to your abilities to become a successful educator.
  • Professional Reflections Statement – Uploaded to graduate application.  Should be 1-2 pages and explain what has led to your decision to become an educator.
